The diary of a World War One U-Boat commander. As well as being a fascinating glimpse of life on the German U-boats during the intense submarine blockade, this also reminds us there were humans involved - on both sides of the action - as we read too of the intimate thoughts and intense love of a man longing for his sweetheart.

The Diary of a Uboat Commander Sir William Stephen Richard KingHall 9781539337010 Books Reviews
I loved the book and enjoyed reading it under the assumption it was non-fiction. It was only towards the end that the character development and the perfect resolution made me realize that it was indeed a work of fiction. Still, it makes a better story and would have been even better as a film than "Das Boot".
We really did not like this book at all; we didn't even bother to finish reading it. The author was a braggadocios lout who thought far too much of himself, and we took and immediate disliking to him. He did not have anything good to say about any of his crew, who he felt were all beneath him, and even his captain, who he felt was jealous of him! I don't know whether something was lost in the translation from German to English, but it was written in the extreme formal style of that period -- World War I -- so much, so in fact, that it was even hard to understand in places. Very stiff, very stuffy, and extremely boring. I'm sorry I bought it; it was a total waste of money.
